GEORGE WELLS CHENEY, 1799 - 1841
This mask of George Wells Cheney is currently the only known records of his appearance. Typically referred to as, “death masks,” the purpose was to preserve ones’ facial features. This process was much cheaper than having a painting done, as photography was not commercially introduced until 1838. However, these casts could have been done prior to George’s passing and used as reference by artists.
